RIBBON DRIVERS  |  LASS SOFTWARE  |  EVENSTAR  |  D-FEND CIRCUIT

SLS Audio acquired Evenstar, the owner of a patented digital amplification technology in March of 2004. As a result of the acquirement, Evenstar is now a wholly owned subsidiary of SLS Audio. Shortly afterwards, SLS Audio released their new Evenstar Equipped PS8R Studio Monitor which featured the company’s patented Sigma Delta amplifier technology. Since then, Evenstar has gone on to produce several innovative products including DIGIPAC Digital Attenuation and Protection Circuit a fully programmable, microprocessor controlled speaker protection device as well as TLINK Digital Communication System for Loudspeakers which enables SMART speaker functionality from a non self-powered speaker. Now Evenstar proudly introduces their newest innovation the D-fendtm Digitally Factored Energy Damping protection circuit.

Designed to solve the age-old problems associated with protecting loudspeakers from excessive power conditions, D-fendtm has eliminated the headaches for speaker engineers - no more hassling with polyswitches, blown lamp filaments, lossy resistors, or slow relays.

Evenstar has once again raised the bar within the audio industry by developing and patenting a unique loudspeaker protection & attenuation device that allows maximum driver performance while ensuring damage free operation. Continuing in the successful evolution of their electronic technology, Evenstar has pushed the limits of modern technology and achieved unparalleled performance in speaker protection with the implementation of these unique features.

Digital Signal Processing – With on-board digital filtering, D-fend provides multiple frequency dependant thresholds and independent attack/release timing parameters. This enables the designer to use D-fend technology prior to passive filtration, and allows increased sensitivity in specific frequency bands such as woofer over-excursion bands or high frequency peak damage regions.

     • Digital Attenuation – Significantly reduced heat, no bulbs, no light output

     • Fully Programmable – On board microprocessor allows user customizable attack, release, and

threshold to maximize loudspeaker performance and minimize SKUs

     • High Power – Capable of protecting high power woofers and sub-woofers from over power

conditions as well as mechanical damage thresholds, an achievement unseen within the audio

       industry

     • High Speed – Extremely fast, capable of protecting the most sensitive high frequency drivers

     • Versatile – MOSFET construction allows easy device voltage & current selection allowing

operation with woofers, tweeters, or midrange devices. Under certain circumstances, D-fend

may also be utilized as a continuous attenuator.

     • Customizable – Monitors both voltage & current under algorithmic control allowing a diversity of

customizable implementations such as adaptive thresholds & attack times, temperature dependant

protection, and real time impedance and power delivery measurements

     • No Aux Power – Operates from a standard speaker-level signal, does not require auxiliary power!

     • Cost – Affordable solution allowing various implementations for cost sensitive applications

     • Musical – Attenuation slewing algorithms provide lamp-like musicality without the nuisance of

light and flammability concerns. Think of it as a high power, speaker-level compressor/limiter

allowing the designer to guarantee unmatched levels of protection for their unpowered

loudspeaker solutions. The following plot illustrates how D-fend can be programmed to match a

loudspeakers power handling characteristics including both response time and required attenuation

       levels.

SIGMA-DELTA 1-BIT DISCRETE DIGITAL AMPLIFIER

SLS Audio is proud to announce their newest, cutting-edge amplifier technology.

Introducing EvenstarTM Sigma-Delta 1-bit Discrete Digital Amplifiers.

By combining their expertise with fixed-carrier digital amplifiers, spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM), and modern digital converter technologies, the SLS Audio engineering team has created a unique 1-bit amplifier topology that reduces both harmonic and inter-modulated distortion, increases bandwidth, improves electromagnetic compatibility and lowers noise floor while maintaining high efficiency, small size, light weight and low thermal dissipation.

Such a design has allowed SLS Evenstar to achieve unparalleled sonic performance that shatters industry norms for harmonic and inter-modulated distortion. Additionally, each amplifier can easily be customized and matched to power respective drivers with exceptional headroom, damping, and uniform response.

The patented Evenstar Sigma Delta Amplifiers feature -

  • True dual power supplies

  • Two robust power supplies incorporated to minimize cross-talk and deliver clean power supply rails for both high and low-frequency amplifiers

  • Low-distortion, low-noise, wide bandwidth signal processing front-end

  • A balanced inputs and multi-channel active crossovers custom designed for individual applications enhancing performance by allowing maximally flat response and accurate time-alignment

  • Sonically Transparent Frequency Progressive Limiting Circuit that can be employed to protect drivers from over-excursion during times of potential unintended low-frequency spikes
